In this article, you will meet Mark Thorhauge and Malte Sølvsten Velin from our Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning team, who explain how they thrive in AudienceProject’s unique blend of flat social structure and solving complex challenges with machine learning.
When did you join AudienceProject, and what motivated you to start working here?
Malte: I joined AudienceProject in 2022, right after finishing my master’s degree. Initially, I was drawn by the opportunity to work on complex systems leveraging big data and machine learning. Now, I’m motivated by my colleagues.
Mark: I joined in 2019, at which point I didn’t know much about what the company was working on. However, the interesting problems and the high quality and volume of data quickly captivated me. Also, creative thinking is very rewarding here because prototyping is fast, and the challenges often require non-stand solutions.
What does a day in the life of an AI & ML engineer look like?
Malte: Since the team is small, we have to be full stack, meaning that we do software engineering and data science, adding variety and novelty to our day-to-day tasks. One day, I’ll be developing a model to predict demographic reach profiles of audiences without relying on cookies, and another day, I’ll be designing and implementing scalable systems.
We also work with our engineers and data scientists, depending on the tasks we deliver within a project. Mainly, if we work on models to apply on our SaaS platform, we work closely with the developers.
How would you describe the culture at AudienceProject?
Malte: AudienceProject’s culture is open and inclusive, meaning that innovation can be bottom-up, and everyone can impact our products and solutions if people want to take responsibility. It is motivating to know that you can contribute to the organisation and that your opinions and ideas are valued.
“What I like the most about AudienceProject’s culture is that we have an ambitious but non-competitive environment. Consequently, I can safely experiment in the solution-finding process and learn from others.“
Mark: Well said! This creates a framework for solving complex problems, creating a flexible environment full of smart and friendly people.
Malte: Moreover, the company’s social structure is flat, so everyone – really everyone – knows and cares about each other, which makes our lunch or social events more exciting and fun.
What do you like the most about working in AudienceProject?
Mark: I really appreciate the nature of the problems we are trying to solve. They are complex problems requiring you to truly understand your data and environment, as well as constantly be curious and seek solutions. At AudienceProject, we have a large amount of quality data, so there are many opportunities to work on interesting custom machine learning projects.
Malte: In addition to that, we have a working environment where I have the freedom to research, which is immensely important when tackling these machine learning problems. Since we are dealing with complex challenges, no standardised solutions from a previous case study can be applied. Therefore, I value our work environment, where I can creatively solve these kinds of problems and work alongside other ambitious people while working on my professional growth.
Why should anyone apply for a job at AudienceProject?
Mark: I believe this is an excellent opportunity to learn many facets of machine learning while requiring people to learn to tackle a wide variety of data science problems. In the AI & ML team, you will learn how to apply theory very non-standardly in a unique company with lots of high-quality data organised and ready to use and play around with.

Many companies use machine learning, but it is rare to find an organisation that leverages its data and exciting parts of engineering, data science and machine learning to solve complex problems while having a down-to-earth and experimental culture.
“It’s rare to find organisations with a great combination of a down-to-earth, playful and experimental culture, but also leveraging serious amounts of quality data and machine learning to solve complex problems.”
Malte: AudienceProject is a very mature company in terms of data and the problems we’re trying to solve, but we still enjoy many of the benefits of a small company: a flat social structure with high impact and contribution to our solutions. One of the most important things is to be ambitious, truly understand the problems and be willing to encounter challenges and push through. We work in very ambitious teams, full of intelligent people with a very honest way of working together.
If those qualities and company values resonate with you and you’re ambitious, then we are more than happy to have a talk with you.
